Looking for active communities for deep-dive technical research

I have been trying to gather some niche data for a research project, but I am finding it difficult to get beyond the surface-level information found on major social media sites. I prefer the long-form discussions found on traditional message boards, where people actually take the time to write detailed responses. Has anyone found a reliable way to discover active communities that still value this kind of interaction? I am looking for places where the archives are well-maintained and the users are experts in their fields.

It is definitely getting harder to find those "hidden gems" now that so much conversation has moved to real-time chat apps. I still find that traditional message boards offer much better searchability for specific technical problems. If you are looking for a curated list of active links forums https://backlink.forum/ you might find some useful starting points there. These types of directories can save you a lot of time by filtering out the dormant sites. I usually check the "last post" date on a few threads before I decide to dive in and register.
